PUMPED UP! Spaun Takes On The Best

The pressure is on, baby! The 2026 U.S. Open is just around the corner, and golf enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement as the best of the best converge on Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. This iconic course has hosted some of the most epic battles in major championship history, and this year's event promises to be no exception.

The loaded 156-man field features a veritable Who's Who of golf royalty, with defending champion J.J. Spaun (+6600) looking to repeat his Oakmont magic against a formidable trio of favorites: Scottie Scheffler (+400), Rory McIlroy (+700), and Jon Rahm (+1400). These heavy hitters are sure to bring their A-game to the links, but what about the dark horses waiting in the wings?

One name that's piqued my interest is Xander Schauffele, perfect (9 for 9) when it comes to top-15 finishes in the U.S. Open. With a remarkable run of 14th or better in each of his 9 career starts, this 30-year-old phenom is poised to make some serious noise at Shinnecock. His course history is nothing short of phenomenal, with a tied-for-sixth finish in 2018 – the same year Brooks Koepka (+4500) held off Tommy Fleetwood (+1600) to win by one shot.

Fleetwood himself is looking to redeem his near-miss from eight years ago when he missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Now in top form with T-11 finishes at the Memorial and RBC Canadian Open, he's got the game to contend with the best of them. And let's not forget about Schauffele's perfect record: nine top-15s without a single finish outside the top 20!

Rahm, a past U.S. Open champion himself, is always a force to be reckoned with. Fresh off a near-miss at the PGA Championship, where he nearly took home the title only to fall short due to Aaron Rai's ( +5500) incredible back nine, Rahm should be more focused than ever.

Other players worth keeping an eye on include Will Zalatoris, who finished T-11 at the Memorial, and Matt Gotterup, a major championship record holder with three top-15s since last June. And don't count out Patrick Cantlay, quietly great in this major, or Tony Finau, always a threat when it comes to birdies.

Of course, there are countless other players looking to make their mark on the golf world. With Shinnecock's notoriously tough conditions – heavy rough, deep fescue, and fast/firm greens – only the bravest of the brave will emerge victorious. The stage is set for an epic showdown in Southampton; don't miss it!
