Penn State University's Dr. Reuben Kraft, funded by the Chuck Noll Foundation, has developed an extraordinary mouthguard that's redefining the limits of innovation in sports technology.
At Aliquippa High School, home to one of Western Pennsylvania's most storied football programs, 11 Quipps will don these cutting-edge mouthguards, equipped with wireless scanners and NASA-level sensors. The device tracks head impacts with unprecedented precision, generating computer simulations that pinpoint the strain on the brain and its regions.
Athletic trainer Mike McGarvey, Aliquippa High School's guardian angel on the sidelines, has witnessed firsthand the data transmitted from each mouthpiece during games. This real-time information enables Kraft's team to create customized scenarios for doctors to diagnose and treat head injuries more effectively.
The project's scope extends beyond Aliquippa High School. Researchers are also studying Division II players at St. Vincent College and Division I athletes at Western Carolina University. Notably, the data suggests that high school football players, like those at Aliquippa, experience comparable head impacts to their collegiate counterparts.
One key factor contributing to these findings is the dual role many high school football players assume – both offense and defense. McGarrey astutely notes: "You're exposing these kids to twice the amount of time to these hits. That's tough."
Last year's study examined two Aliquippa players who averaged 162 head impacts per season, including significant and minor impacts. Senior Mylez Greene, a linebacker, running back, and lineman, shared his concerns: "Sometimes I feel dizzy after a big hit, but I haven't had a concussion... Ninety-plus snaps is a lot of plays, so it does worry me sometimes."
Greene's candid remarks underscore the emotional toll of head impacts on young athletes. McGarrey emphasizes the research's immediate benefits, citing improved player technique and enhanced safety protocols.
Dr. Kraft has already run over 100,000 brain simulations in his first year, with hundreds of thousands more anticipated this season. The ultimate goal: providing sideline information to coaches, trainers, clinicians, parents, players – anyone who can benefit from it.
This research also extends beyond football, exploring head injuries in boys and girls lacrosse at St. Vincent College and girls soccer at Western Carolina University.
