The institution that's older than the United States itself is one I never thought much about until recently. It's the Democratic Socialists of America, and they've been around since 1982. Now, you might not know it, but their president, Zohran Mamdani, just won a big election in New York City. That's right, folks, the biggest electoral breakthrough in DSA history.
But what does this mean? Well, some folks might think it's a threat to the Democratic Party. They might be thinking that this democratic socialist business is too far left for most Democrats. But I reckon they're wrong. You see, there are plenty of things that both Democrats and democratic socialists believe in: democracy itself, civil liberties, racial equality, workers' rights, environmental stewardship, and an economy that works for ordinary people.
Now, I know some folks might be thinking, "But what about the size of government? What about the pace of reform?" And yeah, those are important questions. But let me tell you, when it comes down to it, Democrats and democratic socialists have more in common than they think. They both want to make sure that ordinary people have a shot at the American Dream.
And that's exactly what's happening. You see, voters are getting fed up with politics as usual. They're tired of seeing their costs go up while politicians get richer. And that's why folks like Zohran Mamdani and Katie Wilson are winning elections left and right. They're appealing to people who are frustrated with the status quo.
Now, some Democrats might be thinking, "But what about my brand? What about my party?" Well, let me tell you, the Democratic Party has a big tent, but it's also got some big holes in it. And if we don't start embracing democratic socialists, we're gonna keep losing elections.
That's why I think it's time for Democrats to take a hard look at themselves and ask what they can learn from democratic socialists. Maybe they can learn how to build a broad and diverse coalition. Maybe they can learn how to speak truth to power. And maybe, just maybe, they can learn how to make real change happen in people's daily lives.
But let me tell you, this ain't about ideology. This is about people. It's about building a movement that includes everyone from every walk of life. And if we don't do that, we're gonna keep losing elections. We're gonna keep seeing our costs go up while politicians get richer. And we're gonna keep wondering why we can't seem to make any progress.
So, I reckon it's time for Democrats to take a hard look at themselves and ask what they can learn from democratic socialists. Maybe they can learn how to build a movement that includes everyone from every walk of life. Maybe they can learn how to make real change happen in people's daily lives. And maybe, just maybe, they can learn how to win some elections.
But let me tell you, this ain't about winning or losing. This is about building a better future for everyone.
