At first glance, this may seem like a peculiar phenomenon. After all, the economy is typically the top issue on voters' minds. But according to Gallup's data, a whopping 73% of Americans pointed to non-economic problems as the most pressing concern facing the country. And at the top of that list: 26% cited government or poor leadership.
This trend is not new; it has been building all year, with January seeing a peak in dissatisfaction with government performance. The implications are far-reaching and profound. A collapse of civic trust has resulted in a toxic political environment where bashing the government and promising to take on "the system" pays electoral dividends. It also makes policy compromises, which are essential for legislative achievement, seem like treason.
